Anu* was employed as a domestic worker by Pallavaram DMK MLA I Karunanithi’s son Anto and daughter-in-law Merlina when she was 17 years old. On January 16, she was admitted to the hospital with multiple injuries.
An 18-year-old Dalit girl employed by the son and daughter-in-law of Pallavaram DMK MLA I Karunanithi in Chennai was admitted to the Ulundurpet Government Hospital in Kallakurichi district on January 16 with severe injuries. The girl, Anu (name changed), was found to have cigarette burns, injuries, and contusions on her face and body, and has alleged that the MLA’s son and daughter-in-law assaulted her.
The girl was able to receive medical attention only after she was dropped at her mother’s place in Ulundurpet for the Pongal festival and her mother noticed her injuries. Police at the jurisdictional Neelankarai Assistant Commissioner’s office said that they were yet to receive a complaint from the girl and had merely received information from the Ulundurpet police.
Speaking to TNM, Anu alleged that she was beaten brutally by Merlina, who is married to Karunanithi’s son Anto, at their residence in Thiruvanmiyur, Chennai. Anu started to work at Anto’s residence as a domestic worker eight months ago after she completed her Class 12 exams. She belongs to the Paraiyar community, which is categorised as Scheduled Caste in Tamil Nadu. Anto and his family members belong to the Udayar community, which is categorised as Backward Class in the state.
Anu’s mother is a domestic worker at a residence in Chennai’s Kolapakkam. Due to financial constraints, she allowed Anu to work in Anto’s residence. The mother was promised that the couple would let Anu pursue higher education in April 2023. However, Anu told TNM that in the last eight months, Merlina beat her, burnt her skin with cigarettes, and cut her hair short. Merlina also threatened Anu not to reveal the abuse to anyone.
Whenever Anu’s mother contacted Merlina, she was told that they were in Bengaluru. But Anu’s mother urged them to let her daughter visit home during Pongal. According to Anu, Merlina dropped her off at her residence after warning her with dire consequences if she ever divulged the physical abuse she went through.
“Even before Pongal, they coerced me into signing a paper saying that I owed them Rs 2 lakh that ‘was paid’ for my education and that I would continue to work there for the next three years,” Anu added.
The accident register at the Ulundurpet Government Hospital also recorded that Anu was assaulted using a ladle, stick, and hair straightener. According to her statement to the hospital authorities, she was also kicked at her place of employment. During the medical examination, she was found to have abrasions above the eyes, on the forehead and chin, and burn injuries on both forearms.
The hospital management alerted the police as she had multiple injuries and contusions on her body. The Ulundurpet police further informed the Thiruvanmiyur Police Station as the series of incidents took place in Chennai.
Talking to TNM, a police source from the Neelankarai Assistant Commissioner’s office said they received an intimation from the Ulundurpet police and were yet to receive a complaint from the girl. “Once the complaint reaches us, we will investigate further,” they said.
“They took my phone away, so I could not communicate with my mother. They forced me to sign a bond paper in the presence of my mother to work here for six months in May 2023. At that time, Merlina handed over my phone to my mom.”
Anu, who secured 433 marks in her Class 12 exams, wanted to study medicine. She took up a job as she wanted to save money for NEET coaching.
“I told them I was here to earn money for my studies and they said they would support me financially. In August 2023, Merlina accompanied me to the school while I was getting my Transfer Certificate. After a few days, she told me that she had enrolled me in an institute where I could get an online education and she also told me that she had paid Rs 2 lakh for the course,” she said.
However, Anu never attended any classes online. She requested Merlina several times to be allowed to return home.
Anu also said that Merlina had kept her Class 10 and 12 mark sheets along with the school transfer certificate. According to her, she was not paid for her work. As per the agreement between them, she was supposed to receive Rs 16,000 per month, but she was paid only Rs 5,000.
MLA I Karunanithi denied the allegations and called them false and motivated. Talking to TNM, he said that he was not aware of what happened in his son’s residence, but that his family members did not treat their employees this way. “There could be a personal motive behind this complaint. We treated her like one of our family members and supported her aspirations to study, even celebrated her 18th birthday. These are false allegations,” he said.
Kathir, founder of the non-profit Evidence, said that what happened to the girl was pathetic. “The police are aware of our complaint and have spoken to her. They should immediately file an FIR against the MLA’s son and daughter-in-law.” A fact-finding team from Evidence had met the girl and taken her statement.

கள்ளக்குறிச்சி மாவட்டம், உளுந்தூர்பேட்டை அருகிலுள்ள கிராமத்தைச் சேர்ந்த பட்டியல் சமூகத்தைச் சேர்ந்த தம்பதியின் 18 வயதான மகள், கடந்தாண்டு ஏப்ரல் மாதம் ஏஜெண்ட் ஒருவர் மூலமாக சென்னை திருவான்மியூரில் உள்ள, பல்லாவரம் தொகுதி தி.மு.க எம்.எல்.ஏ இ.கருணாநிதியின் மகன் ஆன்டோ மதிவாணன் வீட்டுக்கு வேலைக்கு சென்றிருக்கிறார். அங்கு அந்த இளம்பெண், தான் பல்வேறு கொடுமைகளைச் சந்தித்ததாகப் புகார் அளித்திருக்கிறார்.

இது தொடர்பாக தமிழக டி.ஜி.பி-யிடம் இளம்பெண் அளித்துள்ள புகாரில், “ஒருநாள் காலை 11 மணி முதல் இரவு 10 மணி வரை மர்லினா என்னை அடித்தார். எனக்கு ரத்த காயங்கள் ஏற்பட்டது. அது மட்டுமல்லாமல் கத்தரிக்கோலை கொண்டு என் முடியை வெட்டிவிட்டுத் தாக்கினார். இதனால் கடும் காயங்கள் ஏற்பட்டது. என் கைகளை தூக்கச் சொல்லி குழம்பு கரண்டியை கொண்டு மர்லினா என் மார்பில் அடிப்பார். என்னை கீழே படுக்கவைத்து, என் முகத்தில் செருப்பு காலால் எட்டி உதைப்பார். இரண்டு கைகளிலும் கன்னத்திலும் தாடையிலும் சூடு வைத்துள்ளார். ஒருநாள் ஆடைகளைக் கழற்றி நிர்வாணமாக்கி, என்னை கடுமையாக தாக்கினார். ஆண்டோ மதிவாணனும் என்னை இரண்டு முறை அடித்திருக்கிறார். ஒருமுறை ஆண்டோ தன்னுடைய மனைவி மெர்லினாவிடம், `நீ அந்த நாயை என்ன வேண்டுமானாலும் செய்துகொள். ஆனால், என் குழந்தை முன்னால் அடிக்காதே, அதனால் நம் குழந்தை பாதிக்கப்படுகிறது’ என்று கூறினார். அன்று முதல் அவர்களுக்கு இடையே பிரச்னை வந்தது. அதற்கும் நான்தான் காரணம் என்று கூறி, மர்லினா என்னை கடுமையாக அடித்து சித்ரவதை செய்தார். கடந்த எட்டு மாதங்களாக நான் அடிவாங்காத நாள்களே கிடையாது.
தினமும் என்னை அடித்து துன்புறுத்தினார். `நீயும் உன் அம்மாவும் ரெட் லைட் ஏரியாவிற்குச் சென்றால், நன்றாக சம்பாதிப்பீர்கள்…’ என்று கூறி, இழிவுபடுத்தினார். என்னை மோசமான வார்த்தைகளாலும், சாதிரீதியாகவும் மிகவும் இழிவாகப் பேசினார். கடந்த 12-ம் தேதி துணி காய வைக்கவில்லை என்று கூறி, குழம்பு கரண்டியால் வலது கண் நெற்றி தலைப்பகுதியில் கடுமையாக தாக்கினார்.
இதனால் எனக்கு ரத்தக் காயம் ஏற்பட்டது. என்னை படிக்க வைப்பதாகக் கூறி பத்து, பன்னிரண்டாம் வகுப்பு மதிப்பெண் சான்றிதழ், மாற்றுச் சான்றிதழ், ஆதார் கார்டு உள்ளிட்டவற்றை மர்லினா வாங்கி வைத்துள்ளார். அதை எனக்குப் பெற்றுத் தர வேண்டும். அவர்கள் இருவர்மீதும் பட்டியல் சாதியினர்/ பட்டியல் பழங்குடியினர் வன்கொடுமை தடுப்பு திருத்தச் சட்டம் மற்றும் இந்திய தண்டனைச் சட்டத்தின்கீழ் வழக்கு பதிவுசெய்து, உரிய நடவடிக்கை எடுக்க வேண்டும் எனக்கு தகுந்த நீதி, நிவாரணம் மற்றும் பாதுகாப்பு வழங்குமாறு கேட்டுக்கொள்கிறேன்” எனக் குறிப்பிட்டுள்ளார்.
இது தொடர்பாக பாதிக்கப்பட்ட இளம்பெண்ணின் குடும்பத்தினருக்காக சட்ட முன்னெடுப்புகளை மேற்கொண்டு வரும், எவிடென்ஸ் கதிரிடம் பேசினோம். “எம்.எல்.ஏ கருணாநிதியின் மருமகள் மர்லினா, மலேசியாவை பூர்வீகமாகக் கொண்டவர் எனத் தெரிகிறது. வீட்டு வேலைக்கு வந்த பெண்ணை ஒரு சைக்கோவைப்போல அவர் கொடுமை செய்திருக்கிறார். கடந்த சில மாதங்களில் இளம்பெண்ணின் கழுத்து, நெற்றி, இமை, கன்னம், முதுகுப் பகுதிகளில் மர்லினா ஏற்படுத்திய காயங்களின் தழும்புகளைப் பார்க்கும்போது, நமக்கே மனம் கொதிக்கிறது. செருப்பு, துடைப்பம், கரண்டி எனக் கையில் கிடைத்ததையெல்லாம் வைத்துத் தாக்கியிருக்கிறார். ஒருமுறை இளம்பெண்ணை, மர்லினா தாக்கியது குறித்து அவரின் கணவர் ஆன்டோ மதிவாணனுக்குத் தெரியவந்ததால், சிசிடிவி-யை அணைத்துவிட்டு, நள்ளிரவு வரை இளம்பெண்ணைச் சித்ரவதை செய்திருக்கிறார் மர்லினா.
வேலைக்குச் சேரும்போது, `உன்னை பி.பி.ஏ படிக்க வைக்கிறோம். இரண்டு லட்சம் ரூபாய் ஃபீஸ் கட்டியிருக்கிறோம். ஆன்லைனிலேயே நீ படிக்கலாம்’ என்று ஆசை வார்த்தைகள் கூறி, இளம்பெண்ணையும், அவரின் தாயையும் நம்ப வைத்திருக்கிறார்கள், ஆண்டோவும் மர்லினாவும். ஆனால், அவருக்கு நடந்த கொடுமைகள் வெளியே தெரிந்துவிடக் கூடாது என்பதற்காக, `அவள் சென்னையில் இல்லை. பெங்களூரில் எங்களுடன் இருக்கிறாள்’ என்று சொல்லியே அவர் தாயை ஏமாற்றியிருக்கிறார்கள்.
மருத்துவமனை குறிப்பு
கடந்த தீபாவளி அன்றுகூட மர்லினா தன் குடும்பத்துடன் வெளியே சென்றுவிட்டு, இளம்பெண்ணை வீட்டில் தனியாகப் பூட்டிவைத்துள்ளார். கடந்த வாரம் மர்லினாவை தொடர்புகொண்ட இளம்பெண்ணின் தாய், `நாங்கள் கொண்டாடும் ஒரே பண்டிகை பொங்கல்தான். எனவே, பொங்கலுக்கு அவளை கட்டாயம் சொந்த ஊருக்கு அழைத்துச் செல்ல வேண்டும்’ என கூறியிருக்கிறார். `நீங்கள் செல்லுங்கள் நாங்கள் கொண்டு வந்து விடுகிறோம்’ எனக் கூறி, கடந்த 15-ம் தேதி இரவு சொந்த ஊரில் ஆண்டோ தன் மாமனார் மற்றும் மாமியாருடன் காரில் கொண்டு வந்து விட்டுள்ளார். முன்னதாக, `உனக்கு 2 லட்சம் ரூபாய் ஃபீஸ் கட்டியிருக்கிறோம். ஊருக்குப் போய் ஏதாவது சொன்னால், உன் குடும்பத்தையே உள்ளே தூக்கி வைத்து விடுவோம்’ என ஆண்டோவும் மர்லினாவும் மிரட்டல் விடுத்துள்ளனர்.
இதைத் தொடர்ந்து 15-ம் தேதி நள்ளிரவு நேரத்தில் உளுந்தூர்பேட்டை அரசு மருத்துவமனையில் இளம்பெண் அனுமதிக்கப்பட்டார். அங்கு அவர் நடந்ததைச் சொல்ல, அவை மருத்துவமனை பதிவுகளில் விபத்தில் ஏற்பட்ட காயங்களாகப் பதிவுசெய்யப்பட்டு, உள்ளூர் போலீஸாருக்குத் தகவல் தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டது. தொடர்ந்து கடந்த 16-ம் தேதி உள்ளூர் போலீஸார் விசாரணை நடத்தி உள்ளனர். சம்பவம் நிகழ்ந்த இடம் திருவான்மியூர் என்பதால், 17-ம் தேதி இரவு திருவான்மியூர் அனைத்து மகளிர் போலீஸார் இளம்பெண்ணின் வாக்குமூலத்தைப் பதிவுசெய்துள்ளனர். எம்.எல்.ஏ-வின் மகன் மற்றும் மருமகள்மீது காவல்துறை கடும் நடவடிக்கை எடுக்க தயங்கக் கூடாது” என்றார்.
An 18-year-old girl, who was employed as domestic help at the house of the son of a ruling party MLA in Chennai, has alleged that she was physically tortured for several months and intimidated besides being denied medical care.
A video testimony of the girl, belonging to a Scheduled Caste, from Ulundurpet in Kallakurichi district, narrating how she was tormented by the MLA’s daughter-in-law was shared by Evidence, a Madurai-based organisation that works for the cause of the Dalits.
According to the testimony of the girl, after she completed her Class XII, through an agent she joined as domestic help at the house of Marlina and Anto Mathivanan in Kolapakkam in Chennai in April last year. The girl alleged that she was repeatedly physically assaulted by Ms. Marlina and was made to do one chore after another in the house. She was also not paid her wages and prevented from communicating with her family and denied medical attention when she suffered injuries following assaults.
The girl claimed that Ms Marlina said she was the daughter-in-law of Pallavaram MLA Karunanithi and hence no one would come to her rescue if she complained about the torture inflicted on her. The MLA had also visited the house where she was employed. However, he had no role in the harassment she underwent and only the daughter-in-law and her husband would assault her, she said.
Evidence’s executive director Kathir said that on the eve of Pongal the girl’s employers had dropped her off at her mother’s house after allegedly obtaining signatures from her on a paper stating she was quitting on her own volition.
A fact-finding team from the organisation had recently gone to Ulundurpet to obtain the girl’s statement. The girl told the team she even suffered bleeding injuries in the assault but was never given first-aid. She suffered in silence out of fear.
The victim lodged a complaint with the Ulundurpet police following which she was directed to undergo medical examination at the Ulundurpet Government Hospital on Tuesday.
Mr. Kathir said the Ulundurpet police informed Thiruvanmiyur All Women Police Station in Chennai about the incident. The Tamil Nadu government must ensure that legal action is taken against the couple and grant compensation to the girl to enable her pursue higher education.
THANJAVUR/MADURAI: Three more men, all caste Hindus, have been arrested in connection with the murder of a 19-year-old girl, Iswarya, allegedly for marrying a Dalit.
The arrested have been identified as K Chinrasu (30), R Thiruselvam (39) and T Murugesan (34), all from Neivaviduthi. They were produced before a Pattukkottai court on Friday and remanded in judicial custody for 15 days. P Perumal (50) and Roja (45), parents of Iswarya, were arrested on January 10.
Meanwhile, ‘Evidence’ executive director Kathir on Friday urged Chief Minister MK Stalin to enact a special law to curb honour killing, and form a special investigation team comprising personnel from another state to investigate the case.
Addressing reporters, Kathir said ‘Evidence’ has found several lapses in the probe, including police failing to produce the couple in the court following inter-caste marriage, and handing over the girl to her parents.
He claimed that though Iswarya’s body was carried for a distance of one km through the village, no one questioned them. “We believe, the entire village is in favour of honour killing.
All the people who were directly or indirectly connected with the killing must be arrested. In 2018, the Supreme Court had issued 21 guidelines for handling honour killing cases. “However, Tamil Nadu government has failed to follow the guidelines and negligence on the part of Palladam police caused the death of the girl. As per field inspection carried out by ‘Evidence’, as many as 24 incidents of honour killing happened in Tamil Nadu from 2021 to 2023,” Kathir said.
He also urged the state to provide full security to Iswarya’s husband Naveen and his family. “A few witnesses gave their confession statement in the case. Their statements must be registered under CrPC 164. Or else, they may turn hostile witness in the near future,” he added.
Iswarya of Neivaviduthi, who was working in a hosiery unit in Tiruppur, got married to Naveen on December 31. Perumal and his relatives, who opposed the alliance filed a girl-missing case in Palladam police station on January 2 and brought her back. Sources said Perumal and his relatives murdered Iswarya and cremated the body on January 3.
Madurai-based dalit rights organization, Evidence, which sent a fact finding committee to
Neivaviduthi in Thanjavur district after a caste killing was reported in the village, has
urged the state government to hand over the case to a special investigation
team preferably with police officials from neighbouring state. The ongoing police
investigation has failed to bring out the conspiracy to kill the 19-year-old girl of kallar
community brutally for marrying a dalit boy from the same locality.
Evidence executive director A Kathir told reporters here on Friday that the fact-finding
team inquired with villagers and found that the victim, Aishwarya, was brought back from
Palladam police station in the wee hours of January 3 by her parents and relatives. “She
was hanged from a tamarind tree behind the house. One of her aunts, unable to bear the
struggle of the girl, slashed the rope with a sickle but she was strangled by her parents
to death. The body of the teen was then taken to the village graveyard by dawn. They
carried her body on a cot in full public view and managed to gather petrol, kerosene and
tyres to burn the body to ashes. The incident came to light only on January 7 after the
girl’s husband B Naveen filed a police complaint at Vattathikottai,” said Kathir.
The police arrested the girl’s parents Perumal and Roja and three more relatives. The
statements of Naveen and his father have been recorded before the Pudukottai
magistrate. Kathir said Palladam police did not follow Supreme Court guidelines to
protect inter-caste couples. They handed over Aishwarya to her parents on January 2
though she should have been produced before court and admitted to a home. Tirupur
district police did not inform Thanjavur district police about this case which is the norm,
he said. None of the village authorities of Neivaviduthi reported the gruesome murder to
their higher officials though everyone was aware of it.
“The way this investigation is heading, we have a strong feeling that the caste outfits
which engineered this honour killing are turning it into a family problem of the victim. It
is a conspiracy orchestrated by the caste groups which should be probed and all of them
should be brought to justice,” added Kathir.
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) comprising police officers from other States should be constituted to probe the recent murder of a 19-year-old girl, P. Isvarya, allegedly by her parents in Thanjavur after she eloped with a youth, Naveen belonging to a Scheduled Caste, A. Kathir, executive director of Evidence, a Madurai-based organisation, said on Friday (January 12, 2024). According to him, there were discrepancies in the police investigation in the case.
“Isvarya’s parents P. Perumal and Roja, after bringing her from Tiruppur where she and the 19-year-old Naveen got ‘married’ (legally void as the boy is not of marriageable age), hanged her from a tree,” he charged.
Later, placing the body on a cot, they allegedly dragged it to a graveyard about one km away from their house and set fire to it on January 3. The crime came to light after five days, only after Naveen filed a police complaint. Further, he said, upon receiving a girl missing complaint from her parents, Tiruppur police found the couple near Veerapandi area in Tiruppur.
“The police brought only Isvarya to the police station, leaving Naveen behind. Then, Isvarya was handed over to her parents, who took her to their village near Thanjavur,” he added.
While there was a 2018 Supreme Court direction to State governments to follow 21 guidelines while dealing with inter-caste marriages, Tamil Nadu police followed none of them.
“Knowing that there was an issue in the marriage, the police allowed the girl to be taken away by their parents. Secondly, Tiruppur police after handing over Isvarya to her parents should have informed Thanjavur police of the incident,” he said.
Sensing the ominous situation, at least the Village Administrative Officer (VAO) should have checked on the girl in her village.
Mr. Kathir alleged that the police, to protect a few caste outfit members, who had a significant role in the murder, were framing only the parents. If not for the police’s lethargic attitude in handling the situation, the murder could have been averted, he said.
He said police protection should be given to the family of Naveen, who registered a police complaint to find the girl. “Since a few witnesses have given their statements, the evidence recorded should be taken under Section 164 (Recording confessions and statements) of the Cr.P.C. to protect them from being misinterpreted,” Mr. Kathir added.
While the Central government had informed Parliament that three caste killings were recorded in Tamil Nadu from 2017 to 2021, Mr. Kathir said, the actual number was significantly undermined as he through his investigation found out 24 caste killings from 2021 to 2023. “Nine of them were recorded in the southern districts,” he added.
